You Won't Read It. That's Sort of the Verse.

You Won't Read It. That's Sort of the Verse.

Thomas Roesch ·

Most shirts with words on them are built to be read. By somebody else, from across a room, in about two seconds.

The He Will Straighten Your Path hoodie is built the other way around. The front is blank. Nothing on the chest, nothing at the collar. The whole verse is on your back, where the one person who can't read it is you.

That's not an oversight. It's closer to the point.

What's actually back there

Proverbs 3:5-6 runs the full length of the back as a cross. PROVERBS is set horizontal in bold serif capitals. The verse itself runs vertical straight through the lettering, and the reference closes it out underneath: 3:5-6. The same graphic as the shirt, scaled up to hold its own against heavier fleece.

The verse, for the record: trust in the Lord with all your heart, don't lean on your own understanding, acknowledge him in all your ways, and he will straighten your path.

Why the back is the right place for it

Read that verse again. It's a list of things you can't check. Trusting with all your heart while you can't see the road. Not leaning on your own understanding, which is exactly the thing you'd like to lean on. It ends with a promise about a path you haven't walked yet.

Proverbs isn't a book of grand gestures. It's mostly practical, short lines about how to live an ordinary Tuesday. Chapter 3 reads like a father talking to his son, which is why this verse sounds less like a sermon and more like advice from someone who already made the mistakes and would like you to skip a few.

A verse like that on the front of a shirt is a statement. On the back, it's closer to what the verse describes. You put it on and walk out the door with something behind you that you'll never once read. You just know it's there.

Said out loud, that's most of what the verse is asking for. Not bad for a hoodie.

It also means the design has nothing to compete with. A full cross of type on the back, a clean front, and no second message fighting for attention. The graphic gets the whole canvas and does the whole job.

Everything else about it

It's an 8.4 oz midweight fleece with a soft brushed face. Heavy enough to keep its shape, light enough that you don't stop reaching for it. Pullover, kangaroo pocket, unisex fit. Nothing on the front, so it goes over a plain shirt, under a jacket, or into a church parking lot without announcing itself.

It comes in Black, Cement, Military Green and Charcoal, sizes S through 4XL. It's $59.97 from S to XL, then steps up a couple of dollars per size from 2XL: $61.97, $63.97, $65.97 at 4XL. Check the size chart on the product page before ordering. Chest width is measured flat, armpit to armpit, so it will look smaller than the number you're used to.

Who it's for

Not the person who wants the verse noticed. The person who wants it there. Somebody in a stretch where the direction is already settled and the walking still isn't easy. Somebody who'd rather carry Proverbs than quote it.

Hood up or hood down, it points the same way.

The hoodie lives with the rest of the fleece line in Hoodies & Sweatshirts.
